DESTIN — City voters chose Dewey Destin, Teresa Hebert, Kevin Schmidt and Johnny King to fill the open City Council seats Tuesday.

Those candidates were the top vote-getters in Destin's at-large, non-partisan municipal election to fill the four open seats on the eight-member council.

Dewey Destin received more than 30% of the vote, Hebert garnered almost 20%, Schmidt received more than 18% and King received more than 17%, according to unofficials results. John Green came in fifth place with more than 14% of the vote.

The newly elected council members will replace Parker Destin (who is Dewey’s son), Chatham Morgan, Cyron Marler and Steven Menchel, none of whom ran for another term.

Dewey Destin, who is finishing his second four-year term on the Okaloosa County School Board, is a founding member of the Destin City Council.

"It’s always an honor to receive the support of the citizens, and I look forward to doing the job," he said. "I previously served six council terms. People know me and know I will do a good job."

Hebert, who has lived in Destin for about 10 years, said she finally secured a council seat after seeking one in two previous contests.

“I’ve been to almost every council meeting in the last couple of years and I’ve been the chair of the city Parks and Recreation Committee for the last seven years,” Hebert said. “I’ve been a part of upgrading our parks, have encouraged our beach purchases and have been proactive in almost every event in Destin and making a difference for the city. I want to help Destin continue to be a city that people will want to move to and visit.”

Schmidt said he looks forward to working for Destin residents.

“I’m excited that the citizens of Destin have given me their vote of confidence with this opportunity,” Schmidt said.

King could not immediately be reached for comment.

Destin's council members serve four-year, unpaid terms. The first council meeting with the new members will be Nov. 16.

Q&A: Five candidates vie for four open Destin City Council seats

Besides choosing the new council members, city voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a city charter amendment that calls for no building height in Destin to exceed six stories/75 feet unless approved by at least 60% of the voters at a general election.

New language added to the charter will include the statement, “No structure, no part of any structure, and no attachment to any structure shall be erected to a height greater than six stories (75 feet) above the crown of the abutting road.”
